Weddapalooza: Saturday, August 20, Part III

19 Sep

The car was packed on the way to Jungle Island, but everyone was so excited that the tight quarters didn’t bother anyone.  As soon as we got there Addam and I headed up the to second floor for our cocktail hour, as it was already underway and we wanted the bridal party to enjoy the reception as much as possible.

Caterers were passing around nine appetizers, but since I’m vegan I could only enjoy the vegetable spring rolls with ginger plum sauce. I hadn’t eaten all day, so I scarfed down a few of them as soon as I got there. Just so everyone knows, our hor d’oeures included:

  • Large fried shrimp with apricot-horseradish sauce
  • Conch fritters with key lime mustard sauce
  • Brie and raspberry en croute
  • Lobster fritters with red pepper aioli
  • Beef empanadas
  • Assorted dim sum with ginger soy sauce
  • Vegetable spring rolls with plum sauce
  • Sesame chicken with oriental ginger sauce
  • Crabmeat turnovers

After welcoming everyone to the reception, Ana pulled Addam and I aside so we could check out the reception room before guests had a chance to make their way in. Everything looked absolutely perfect, and we were very pleased with how everything came together. I don’t know what I was expecting, but I was completely blown away.

Weddapalooza: Saturday, August 20, Part II

14 Sep

I could see droves of brightly colored bridemaids and groomsmen as JoAnn drove me up to Club Paradise in Crandon Park. We dropped Katie, Courtney and Emily off at the site’s entrance, and I tried to bury my head as much as I could to prevent Addam from seeing me before the ceremony. Once we were in the clear and Ana, my wedding planner, had handed me my bouquet, JoAnn drove me around the corner so I could enjoy some air conditioning while waiting for the ceremony to begin.

At that point I hadn’t had a chance to check out the set up, but Ana really did a great job. She tied bushels of baby’s breath around many of the palm trees and a few of the chairs. She added little touches of jade wherever she could and, since it was such a hot day, placed handheld wooden fans at every seat. With the ocean backdrop, I don’t think anyone who came could deny that it was a beautiful ceremony.

Weddapalooza: Saturday, August 20, Part I (UPDATED!)

7 Sep

I was up late hanging with John and Krysti the night before, so the morning of my wedding came quickly. As soon as I got up and hopped in the shower I gave Emily a call, who arranged to have her Uncle Keith transport Heather and I to the Hilton. (Thank God for Uncle Keith. He was one of the only people who rented a car for the weekend, so he quickly became our personal taxi. All jokes aside, I really don’t know what we would have done without him.)

As soon as we got to the Hilton, the girls (Heather, Emily, Courtney and myself) hopped in JoAnn’s car and headed to a beauty school to get our hair did. Katie met us there shortly after, and by 10:30 or 11 a.m. we were seated and ready to go. JoAnn surprised us with manicure and pedicures, so we definitely got the star treatment.

Weddapalooza: Friday, August 19

31 Aug

The bachelor parties wore us out, so Addam and I made a point of sleeping in on Friday. Once we were well-rested, Ben, Chris and Andrew met us at the apartment and drove us over to Crandon Park for our second wedding rehearsal. (Or our first official one, depending on how you choose to look at it.)

Before hitting the beach the guys and I stopped by a grocery store to stock up on food for the reception cook out, a tux shop to pick up Addam’s suit for the wedding and a printing place to print out a guest sign-in poster that I designed for the reception. The tux shop was a bust because we got there a little too early and it hadn’t been delivered, but everything else was a great success.

We made it to the wedding location around 4 p.m., and there was already a group of people waiting for us. Once everyone got there we started planning out exactly how we wanted everything to look.

In the end we decided that Ryan should walk down the aisle first, as he was going to play the guitar throughout the ceremony, followed by John, our officiate.  Addam would escort Judy, followed by Ben and my mom, and the rest of Addam’s groomsmen — Winston, Matt (our last minute, but totally awesome, addition), Andrew and Chris. My maids would come next, with Danae followed by Stephanie, Tati, Courtney, Katie, Heather and Emily. Yoga would run the rings down the aisle, and then  Steve and I would walk. After the ceremony we decided that Addam and I would walk out first, followed by Ben and Emily, Chris and Heather, Andrew and Katie, Matt and Courtney, John and Tati, Winston and Stephanie, and Ryan and Danae. Not everyone could make the rehearsal, but the majority of us was there, so it worked out.

Weddapalooza: Thursday, August 18

28 Aug

The Thursday before my wedding started early and ended late. (As all good bachelor/bachelorette parties should.)

Addam and I had to meet with Ana, our wedding planner, to pay off Jungle Island at noon, so we were biking to Bayside a couple of hours before we were actually awake. After crossing Ts and dotting Is we were on our way to Crandon Park on Key Biscayne for our first official wedding run through.

One week, seven days, half a fortnight

14 Aug

I just got back from a fabulous art exhibit curated by my bridesmaid Danae and decided that it was time to update you guys with a few more details about the wedding. I’m not going to give away any of the big stuff I have planned, but I thought that a little inside look would help everyone get as excited as I am. I can’t believe that in a week I’ll be a married woman!

The Ceremony

Our Arch

I’m not sure if this is the exact arch we’ll be using, but our’s should be very similar. Addam and I wanted something with lots of flowers, and this was just in our budget. I think it will give the ceremony that extra little pop that it needs to make things memorable. That being said — those are not our chairs. I would never pick baby blue. Our chairs will be wrapped in jade.

Our Bouquets

While I haven’t seen it yet, my bouquet is going to include a mixture of white roses and calla lillies, wrapped together by a bit of brown twine. My maids are going to have similar bouquets, only smaller and without the roses. Addam and his men will wear calla lillie boutonnieres, and our mom’s will both wear white orchid corsages.

The Reception

Our Tables

Addam and I have never been the typical couple, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that we’re not going to have the average wedding. We decided to name our tables after tents at Bonnaroo. Upon arriving at Jungle Island, our guests will be escorted to What Table, Which Table, This Table, That Table, The Other Table or Table Where. Addam and I will sit at The Troo Music Table.

While it will probably become very confusing, I love the signs our planner has designed. She really understands our “hippie” nature and found some pieces of wood that she’s decorating with table names. I’m not sure how we’re working them into our table arrangements, but I’m confident that they’re going to look amazing. At the very least — I’m fairly sure it hasn’t been done before.

Our Cake

Like the arch, this is an example of what we will have at our reception and not the actual cake. Ours will include jade details instead of blue and calla lillies instead of whatever flowers were used in the photos. I haven’t discussed flavors, but Addam and I will probably go with a white layer and a chocolate layer so that everyone goes home satisfied.

The Bridesmaids

Our Hair

I hadn’t really thought about what I was going to do with my hair until Kim, Katie’s mom, sent me a fabulous style that I’ve become obsessed with. I always knew that I wanted to wear a big, white flower in my hair, but I hadn’t considered a braid until I saw the photo she sent. I’m arranging to have a stylist meet us at a hotel that Saturday, so I’m hoping everything goes off without a hitch.

While I don’t want any of my maids to have the exact same hairstyle as me, I do want all of us to look unified. For that reason, I’m hoping that all my maids will agree to wear some sort of braid in their hair. I don’t really care what they pick as long as it looks good, but I’ve included a few photos of the type of styles I’ve been considering. (And, since Heather and Emily have special roles and should stand out, I’m hoping that they’ll both agree to wear flowers in their hair as well.)

Even though there is a lot more I could post, it’s important to me that the wedding include a few hidden surprises. I hope that everyone has received their invitation and can join Addam and I we look out at our future together.

“There is no more lovely, friendly and charming relationship, communion or company than a good marriage.” – Martin Luther, German priest and professor (1483-1546).

Wedding update: 13 days and counting — UPDATED, again!!

7 Aug

I apologize folks! It’s been awhile since I’ve provided you guys with an update on my daily happenings, but I’ve been insanely busy trying to pull a wedding together in less than a month! After countless meetings with the wedding planner, constant texts from the bridesmaids and a photographer who decided to bail on me at the last minute — I’m finally ready to provide the latest news in the Hopkins/Evans wedding. First things first…

The Ceremony

As I’ve said before, the ceremony is going to be at Club Paradise in Crandon Park at Key Biscayne. Since it’s going to be extremely hot, and since no one really cares about the part where you actually get hitched, Addam and I have decided to push for a quick ceremony. (This is no royal wedding folks — so feel free to leave the hymns at home.)

There are, however, two aspects of the ceremony that I am particularly excited about. One is a little touch that I’m hoping will surprise Addam’s family. I’d say more, but I don’t want to ruin anything by giving it away. The other is the vows. Addam and I writing our own, and while I am not nearly finished, I’ve made pretty good progress this weekend. As much as I’m going to hate to ruin Emily and Judy’s makeup, I’m fairly confident that there won’t be a dry eye in the house.

The Reception

After a month of searching, our location is finally set. The event is taking place at Jungle Island, which is a big tourist attraction for those visiting Miami. Guests can enjoy jungle tours and parrot shows during our cocktail hour, which will feature an open bar and nine, NINE, IX, hor d’oeures, including:

  • Large fried shrimp with apricot-horseradish sauce
  • Conch fritters with key lime mustard sauce
  • Brie and raspberry en croute
  • Lobster fritters with red pepper aioli
  • Beef empanadas
  • Assorted dim sum with ginger soy sauce
  • Vegetable spring rolls with plum sauce
  • Sesame chicken with oriental ginger sauce
  • Crabmeat turnovers

After cocktails guests can head into our main reception hall, which should be perfectly suited for the 50-60 guests we’re expecting. Even though I’m sure everyone will be pretty full on appetizers, dinner will include a wild mixed green salad with tomatoes, cucumber and a citrus vinaigrette dressing, a sauteed breast of chicken piccata with lemon-caper sauce, a vegetable medley, and garlic and shallot mashed potatoes. Since I can’t eat anything other than the salad, the wonderful crew at Jungle Island are designing me a meal of my choosing. Any guests looking for a torture-free option can chow down on potato gnocci with marinara, wild rice and steamed veggies. The open bar continues through the entire four-hour reception and includes:

  • Jim Beam
  • Smirnoff
  • Jose Cuervo
  • Beefeater gin
  • Bacardi Silver and Parrot Bay rum
  • Canadian Club rye
  • Dewar’s White Label scotch
  • Budweister
  • Bud Light
  • California red and white wine.

The reception should be pretty fun. Addam and I love a good party, so we’ve put the majority of our effort into making sure that it is the highlight of the night. Our soundtrack is set and, while I’m not going to give anything away, I have to say that we’ve picked the PERFECT song for our first dance. After eight years together Addam and I will finally have a song to call our own, and I can’t think of anything that’s a better fit. It’s modern, it’s old fashioned, it’s sweet and it’s fun. More than anything — it fits us and our relationship. I’m very excited to see everyone’s reaction.

The Bridesmaids

It’s been an effort, but the majority of my maids are finally in dresses. After struggling to get everyone set, I decided to allow each maid to pick their own cut and color — as long as it was bright and vibrant. While I thought that would be original and make everything easier, it’s actually complicated the entire process. If I ever do this again, (and I’m not), I’m picking one dress and forcing my girls into them, like it or not, for better or worse.

That said, I’ve been pretty happy with most of the choices.

As I have it set right now, (and this could definitely change in upcoming weeks, given how things have been working out):

  1. Emily will wear jade and walk with Ben.
  2. Heather will wear coral and walk with Chris.
  3. Katie will wear yellow and walk with James.
  4. Courtney will wear blue and walk with Andrew.
  5. Tati will wear fushia and walk with John.
  6. Stephanie will wear purple and walk with Mike.
  7. Danae will wear jade and walk with Ryan.

The Invites

In another big feat, Addam and I finally got our invites out this week and have even started hearing back from people who are coming. While I know that not many people are going to be able to make it, I sent invites out to anyone and everyone we knew in the hopes that someone might surprise us. In case you haven’t gotten your’s yet, I’m including photos:

While I know it’s short notice, if you’re planning on coming, please RSVP to hopkinar@gmail.com by the end of the week, as we need a final head count for caterers.

Bachelorette Party/Bridal Shower

Thanks to my very fabulous bridesmaids, I’m all set to enjoy a bachelorette party and bridal shower in the days leading up to the wedding.

The bacelorette party will start around 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 18, which should leave us with some time to recuperate! Katie and Emily have been planning a pre-game “Liquor & Lace” party, after which we’ll head out for a pub-crawl before meeting the boys at a strip club. As of right now most of Addam’s men won’t be getting in until Friday night, but he has plenty of friends around here to keep him entertained, I’m sure. :)

The bridal shower will be the following afternoon. Addam and I registered at Target, so we’ll hopefully get a few of the things that we need to start our lives together. We only need each other, but anything helps.

And that’s really it folks! I’m sure I’ll have some time between now and the wedding to update, but feel free to email me if you have any questions in the meantime. Addam and I cannot wait to share our big day with all of you.

“Well, it’s my birthday too, yeah!”

17 Jul

Well folks, as much as I hate turning another year older, I must admit that my birthday weekend has been fabulous — thanks entirely to my incredible friends and (soon to be) family.

But before I go into detail about the festivities I should backtrack, as a ton has happened since my last post.

When Addam got off work last Sunday he immediately invited me out to Churchill’s, a little English-style pub located less than a block from our apartment. I love the place, so while I’m usually not the type of girl to doll myself up before a night out, I decided to make a bit of on effort. (Very little, as the photos can attest.)

Ben, bikes, boats and Biscayne

9 Apr car full

I have yet to fully recover, but I figured there was a group of people out there waiting to hear all about the fabulous weekend Addam and I had with his little brother, Ben.

Ben got in Wednesday afternoon, making it ridiculously difficult for me to concentrate on the interviews I had to conduct before calling it a wrap on my work day. I did my best to stay focused, and Ben picked me up as soon as I finished up. At that point we had a few hours to kill before Addam got off work, but we decided to go for a swim in South Beach rather than hurry home.

It was the perfect afternoon for swimming and the first time I’d been in water since the new year. Ben was amazed by how blue the water was and kept saying that it was the only time he’d swam in an ocean so clear, but I couldn’t believe the waves. Addam and I must have been catching the tide at the wrong time, because any other time we’ve been they have been pretty weak. That day, however, they were making me their lap dog. The waves tossed me all over the ocean, and by the end of an hour I was pretty worn out.

Lord knows how I’ve missed her

14 Dec 58016_862543678469_7809926_47588862_4901197_n

Just when I thought that this weekend couldn’t possibly top last, Emily and Ryan make it into town for a full three days off fun and fabulousness. I would have posted this update on Monday, but I was so tired I think I may have fallen asleep on the bus on the way home from work. I had to use the majority of Monday evening to recuperate.

As much as I love my job, the nine hours I spent sitting at my desk on Friday seemed unbearable knowing that my little sister was slowly making her way down to me. Emily and Ryan woke up to a flat tire, so they ended up being a little later than they expected, which was horrible for them, but great for me. If they would have gotten in before six I don’t know how I could have stayed to finish up the articles I wanted to submit before they got in.

My favorites made it to my apartment right around 6:15 p.m. and met me around 30th street shortly there after. After a few squeaks, squeals and bear hugs, we all made our way to Bayside, which is quickly becoming Addam and my favorite place to take visitors. We parked at my office, and I gave them a quick tour before we headed out.

Emily and Ryan were starving, so we got some pasta. It was an absolutely gorgeous night, and we decided to sit outside and catch up. It’s strange how having Emily near me for even one minute makes me realize just how much I’ve missed her. Every time I see her again I always wonder how I stand being away.

We walked around Bayside for awhile, seeing the sites and taking some fabulous photos. We had a brief upset when Emily lost her purse (would she be my sister if she didn’t?), but relax, relax. After three days of calling Bayside and the police, the only kind soul left in Miami found and returned it. I know, right?! I thought that she’d never see it again, and yet, there it is, sitting by my feet as I type.

After after-dinner drinks, some fun photos with the local Swisher Sweeties, and a few trips around the city on the Metromover, we headed back to the apartment, where we all stayed up ridiculously late laughing and planning the weekend festivities.

Before I go on and on about the rest of the weekend, I think that I need to point out to everyone who does not already know that this is the first time I’ve ever met Ryan. We’ve talked a bunch, we’re Facebook friends, but I’ve never quite met him on the face-to-face. Needless to say…I was very impressed.

I don’t really know how to describe how good he is to my sister, which is the best thing about him, but suffice it to say that I know she is being taken care of, which lifts a great weight from off my shoulders. I also know that she’s happy, which is quite possibly the most important thing in the world to me. In fact, her happiness completely coincides with how great I think he is, and from where I’m sitting, they’re both 10s.

AND — the dude is incredibly funny, which I always appreciate. I don’t really hang with people who can’t make me laugh, and he had me cracking up all weekend. It makes me feel fortunate that he’ll be in both Emily and my life for a long time to come.

After a late night and (somewhat) early morning, we all hopped in the car and headed out to Key Biscayne to check out wedding locations.

We got a little turned around finding Crandon Park, but once we found the place we got the full tour. Every place we saw was amazing and would make for a beautiful location, but I think Addam and I are going to go with Club Paradise because it’s private and has the most shade.  Addam’s putting the deposit down tomorrow morning, so I need to make sure to get the finishing touches on my save the dates.

Addam and I have decided not to have the reception on the beach. It was a hard decision, and something we didn’t want to give up, but we love music, and Crandon Park doesn’t allow for any sort of amplification. Which…just does not work for us.

After checking out the hot spots the whole gang headed down to the Rusty Pelican for dinner. We had been told by park officials that that is where most couples end up having their reception, but when I went to inquire about rates they told me that they were going to be closed for renovations over August.

I don’t get why they plan to renovate, because the place was absolutely amazing.  I honestly didn’t think that any of us would be able to afford it at first, but we stuck it out and were glad we did. The food was epic.  I literally could have filled up on bread, and I think I kind of did. I got the best tomato soup I’ve ever had in my life and a salad.

The only thing better than the food was the view. Our waiter, who was a bit rude and absentminded, placed us near a big window by the water, so we got to watch sea planes and yachts jet by while we ate. We even got a glimpse of a wedding reception, which only made me more excited about my big day. (Oh, and one of the groomsmen was Will.i.am. From Fergie.  I mean, really. I think it was him. I wanted to hire him to work my reception.)

Right after dinner Emily and I went wedding dress shopping for some quality bride/maid of honor time.  It was about 5 p.m., and I thought a lot of places would be closed, but David’s Bridal was open and accepting.

Guys…I tried on soooo many dresses.  I’ve said before that I am not the typical bride. Since I had no idea what I liked, I wanted to try on everything. I put on mermaid cuts, strapless cuts, form fitting and flowing. I tried trains, no trains, veils and tiaras, and in the end, I still love the first one I ever tried on.

I’m not including the photos of actual contenders on here, because I am sure Addam will be reading this blog post. The one I’m including is a total princess cut. Definitely not what I’m going for, but I had to try it. Don’t worry. I plan on posting an update, for your eyes only, later this week. I’m not very traditional, but I want Addam to be amazed when he sees me in my dress for the first time. Which means that he absolutely cannot see me in my final pick. He seems ok with that. In fact, I think he may be more concerned with keeping the dress hidden than I am.

I do have to say though — I never knew how much putting on a wedding dress would affect me.  I didn’t know what to expect, but I never thought that I’d ever feel so bridal. Seeing myself in a gown for the first time really got to me.  It all seemed so official, and I couldn’t wait for Addam to see me walking toward him on a beach in Key Biscayne.

The coolest part? There was no mirror in the changing room, so the first reaction I ever got was Emily’s.  I’d come of out the little closet and immediately look to her for an opinion, which kind of helped me judge what I would think upon seeing the dress.  (Yeah, she has that much of an influence over me, and I really just want her to think I’m pretty on my wedding day. Is that so insane?) We immediately sent all of the photos we took to Steve and Judy, but as they had completely conflicting opinions, I really don’t know what that to take away from it all…

After picking out of ton of swatches, (I think I’m going to go with a jade green and tan-ish color), Emily and I headed out to meet the boys, who apparently spent two hours drinking whiskey and shooting the shit.  We had planned to go see Black Swan, but I incorrectly thought that it was already playing in Miami.  We’re going when Ryan and Emily get back from their cruise on Friday.

Without plans for the night, we all decided to head out to South Beach.  A couple of five-hour energies and we were more than good to go.

After Emily and I  followed this troll of a woman into a ritzy hotel to pee, we met up with the boys and headed to the water. We spent the evening munching on leftovers and taking ridiculously cute and funny photos.  Addam would shout out a scenario, and we would all pose to act it out. I wish my descriptions could do the game justice, but it really was a good time. If nothing else, we kept each other laughing.

After Addam took a jump in the December ocean, and after taking about a thousand pictures of these classic CJ’s we found near Collins Avenue, (Addam is obsessed), we headed home.

Addam had to work on Sunday, so Ryan, Emily and I planned to spend the day checking out wedding dresses and bridesmaid gowns. Unfortunately, it turned into three hours of driving around in search of any open bridal stores. After wandering hopeless for a couple hours, we decided on Macy’s, which also had absolutely nothing to work with.  I’ve already scheduled a ton of appointments for next weekend so we don’t run into the same issues.

Addam got off around sixish, and we all headed to this BOMB Mexican restaurant where we fueled up on chips and tacos. The service was lack-luster, but the food was amazing. The woman who rang us up was simple and foolish, so my food was free, so I honestly can’t complain. The sauces were amazing, and Addam and I plan on hitting it up again in the near future.

Back at the apartment we had an easy evening of The House Bunny and  Zack and Miri Make a Porno.  I don’t know what time I went to bed, but I do know that Monday morning was a tough one.

Luckily, we all went out for breakfast, which was a good start to what would be a long day.  I maxed out on a much needed egg and cheese sandwich from Subway, and Ryan and Emily set out for their cruise. Addam spent the a.m. making sure they were all aboard, and I was jealous that I couldn’t be there to send them my love as they set sail.  I pictured myself waving furiously as their boat made its way out of the port.

It’s now Tuesday, and I’m much more rested. I plan on going to bed early everyday this week in anticipation of the incredible weekend I have coming up. Dress shopping, tattoos and Black Swan? Yeahhhh. I can deal with it. I just wish it never had to end. Not to get sappy, but it’s going to be really hard to embrace the cold after being engulfed in sunshine.
