Blogaroo: Day 4: Primus

5 Jun

Primus, a rock band that got their start in 1984, is composed of frontman and bassist Les Claypool,  guitarist Larry “Ler” LaLonde and drummer Jay Lane. While the band has had an international presence for what will soon be 3o years, the group may be best known for creating the original theme for South Park in 1997. Claypool, who I’ve seen about four times at various festivals, also wrote Seinfeld’s theme in 1990.

PRIMUS SUCKS, and I cannot wait to finally see them, in full form, this summer. Addam and I discovered Claypool at our first Roo in 2008 and immediately fell in love. We have seen him at festivals every summer since and even got to check him when out when he was playing at The Riviera in Chicago — a show that I wish I remembered a little better.

Still, we’ve never seen him as part of Primus, which is where he really got his start. Claypool is an energetic and interesting performer — often wearing masks or other costumes and always inventing his own instruments. And, he’s a pretty funny guy.

Below is a video of Primus playing Bonnaroo in 2004.

.

If you haven’t seen Les live, take my word for it that a video cannot do him justice. I can’t wait to watch him get back to his roots with the band he founded. Four more days! Four, hopefully, short days.
