Blogaroo: Day 5: fun.

1 Jun

The group fun. got started in New York City in 2008, following the break up of The Format. After the group disbanded, Nate Ruess teamed up with Andrew Dost and Jack Antonoff of Anathallo and Steel Train. Dost had toured with The Format, and Ruess met Antonoff after The Format toured with Steel Train. The band recorded their first demo, Benson Hedges, in 2008 — which ultimately led to a gig with Chevy  and spot on the 2012 Bonnaroo lineup.

They’ve blown up in four years, and something tells me they’re only getting bigger.

I hadn’t heard of fun. until the Bonnaroo lineup was released, but oh, dear God, am I happy that I know them now. As I’ve said, they’re an indie pop band based in New York, and you can definitely hear the city’s influence on the band’s sound. As I’m young and (relatively) rebellious, I relate to their lyrics, which I find to be both inspiring and a little haunting. At the very least, I’ve found meaning behind what I have heard. And they can really pump me up for a long bike ride home from work.

Check out the group’s biggest hit, We Are Young, and let me know what you think by leaving a comment or voting in the poll at the end of this post.

Even though fun.’s 6:45 p.m. Sunday set conflicts with Young The Giant, The Civil Wars and The Shins, nothing will keep Addam and I from their show. They’ve promised big things, so I can’t wait to see what they have up their sleeves. Four hours of Phish follows, so it’s sure to be a great end to a *fun* and fabulous weekend.

“This is it, boys, this is war – what are we waiting for? Why don’t we break the rules already? I was never one to believe the hype — save that for the black and white. I try twice as hard and I’m half as liked, but here they come again to jack my style.” — fun., Some Nights, Some Nights (2012).

I love the “Sounds Like:” section of the Blogaroo!
I always refer to it when deciding whether or not to listen to the current Blogaroo feature 🙂
